Caroline Birch

Disaster Relief Executive, Humanity Insured 

Prior to joining Humanity Insured, Caroline spent 20 years planning and delivering humanitarian aid operations in response to complex emergencies worldwide, supporting those affected by natural disasters and conflict.

With the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) she was posted to Europe, Africa, across Asia, and finally to HQ in Geneva. Within a multi-disciplinary team she specialised in Protection, conducting activities such as visiting detainees, restoring family links, promoting implementation of International Humanitarian Law/Human Rights Law and documenting violations.

Caroline then worked with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Chad. She supported six field offices around the country, coordinating the humanitarian response to climate-related disasters and for people seeking refuge in Chad from neighbouring countries.

From 2016 to 2020 Caroline worked in Pakistan and Iran with the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), one of the world’s largest humanitarian donors providing needs-based humanitarian assistance. She supported humanitarian interventions for people affected by disasters and displacement in sectors including food and nutrition, health, water and sanitation, shelter, Education in Emergencies, and protection. Since 2021 Caroline had been working in the Climate Risk and Resilience Team at Howden, a global insurance broker, before moving to join Humanity Insured when it was launched in June 2024.
